You're only limited by your imagination, and AFS opens up a world of adventure by offering exchange programs in 52 countries. AFS programs present a variety of choices, allowing over 11,000 participants annually to adjust program focus according to their individual needs.

AFS Egypt, known as the Egyptian Society for Intercultural Exchange, is a voluntary, non-profit organization. Through our exchange programs for high school students we offer the opportunity be exposed to a wide variety of cultures.

AFS Egypt Administers the Following Programs:

Year Program - Sending
Operating under the supervision of the Ministry of Education, AFS/Egypt provides high quality services to its exchange programs for15-18 year old students.

Students attend school and live with a host family. The program runs annually from August through July. Imagine what it's like to spend a year in a totally different culture - new foods, new friends, a new family, new sights and sounds everywhere, a new school, and the challenge of learning to get along in a new language! The most important part of being an AFS student is being able to adapt to other cultures and see how other people live.

Year Program - Hosting
Students from the ages 15-18 spend a year in Egypt, where they have an opportunity to experience the fascinating blend of many different cultures. Students live with upper-middle class Egyptian families and are enrolled in private English or French language schools. Host school attendance is required, not optional.

The AFS office in Egypt offers the following activities to hosted students:

Four orientations throughout the AFS year.
Egyptology lectures followed by field trips.
Arabic language lessons.
A trip to upper Egypt (Luxor and Aswan) to witness the splendor of both the historical and modern cultures of Egypt.
Various other trips to different locations in Egypt.
Students are not on their own but are in continuous contact with AFS staff members and volunteers (counselors and AFS friends).
The Semester Program (SP)

This program lasts about six months over the course of an academic school semester. Like the Year Program, students stay with host families, attend local schools and take part in community activities. Host school attendance is required, not optional, for Semester Program participants.

The Intensive Program (IP)
AFS/Egypt offers an intensive 4 week program. The overall purpose of this program is to introduce AFSers to the multiple interwoven cultures of Egypt which can be traced back more than 5000 years. The program focus is on history from the archaic period more than 3000 years before Christ until the present day. Some of the related topics which will be discussed are:

civilization and culture as history
life on the banks of the Nile River
the Nubians and their special characteristics
the Bedouins in the eastern and western deserts
religion from ancient times to Ackhenaton
Judaism, Christianity, and Islam

In addition, the program touches upon politics and Egypt's role in the Middle East and Africa in times of war and in times of peace from the beginning of the 20th century until today.

The intensive program is intended to be as comprehensive and clear as possible in such a short period of time. More information is available upon request.

AFS organizations worldwide are constantly adding to their core programs by offering activities for different age groups, introducing new country combinations and establishing variable components such as domestic programs, vocational-based short programs for individuals over the age of 18, teacher/educator exchanges and School Link projects among primary and secondary schools.
