Community Service Programs

 

 
 

The AFS Community Service Program is an outstanding opportunity for Young Adults (aged 18-29) who are high school graduates.  This AFS program offers participants to gain an exceptional intercultural experience while working as a volunteer in a local community in another country for a period of up to 6 months. The program provides the ultimate intercultural experience for young adults who would like to make a positive impact on communities in need of help. 

Participants can go to one of four countries (Costa Rica, Brazil, Paraguay or Thailand) during either August –January, or January through June – it’s your choice.

What do participants get out of this experience?

Travel and working experience overseas

Spanish or Thai language skills, as well as English language enhancement

A choice of one of three destinations in Latin America or Thailand

Immersion in a local community living with a host family and working as a volunteer in a non-government community-based organization.

Become part of a local AFS group and engage in social and orientation AFS activities designed to support you and enhance the experience.

Inclusive program package covering international and domestic travel, medical insurance, visa application, host family placement, 24 hour emergency assistance overseas as well in Hong Kong orientation, support and guidance from the AFS network in Hong Kong and overseas before, during and after the experience, involvement in our extensive AFS Alumni network.

What skills will you gain?

Global Citizen? International Ambassador? That’s you! You’ll become part of an international network of “AFS ambassadors” representing your country and culture. You become a confident and competent global citizen and understand the world you live in much better. You gain outlook, maturity and self confidence as you step out of your comfort zone and learn about the real world from an international perspective.

Adventure, excitement and a fantastic time. An AFS exchange is living in a totally different culture, learning about a new language and culture. The stories and the people you get to know while you see, hear, live and learn on the other side of the world is something you’ll never forget.

AFS Community Service program is for 18-29 year olds who have or are about to finish high school.

It’s for young adults are after an authentic overseas experience but prefer work experience

It’s an excellent program for AFS returnees who would like to add international work experience to their resume and are keen on another intensive intercultural experience.

What is the fee, and what does it include?

Participation fees is HK$30,000. All fees include medical costs, AFS orientation, and program materials, food and lodging are provided by voluntary host family. AFS participants will live with host families selected by AFS. The family homestay provides an opportunity to learn first-hand about the culture as well as to enhance language ability. Visa fees and international travel fees are the expense of the participant.
